Chucuito, Peru

Temple of Fertility
bestpicturegallery.com
The rarified air outside Puno, Peru is 12, 628 ft.  When you travel to Chucuito this lack of oxygen contributes to the magical experience. Take Diamox before hand so you can enjoy it.

Located across from Lake Titicaca, this small  village of stone walls and stone houses is best known for a unique Temple of Fertility. Many of the  phallus have been decapitated, but the small area still has its unique charms.

If pre-Catholic rituals don't interest you, perhaps the two imposing churches that face the Plaza de Armas will.  Both date from the 1600's when Chucuito was the capital of the province. Now the town's residents are not numerous enough to support one church and it's hard to find either one open.

Chucuito is very quiet. You won't see any cars or hear any dogs. Enjoy the fresh fried  trout. Shop for sodas at the little grocery store and buy titeros de dedos, the crochet finger puppets you see in museum gift shops, from the local children. Take a walk and look through the stone mirador at the lake and the road to Bolivia. If you decide to stay, there are several options including home stays and the strange faux stone Hotel Taypikala. It resembles Gaudi in more ways than one.  Near the plaza, find the more traditional Las Cabanas.

The best part of Chucuito is that it is a vacation from Puno.
